HeadphonesOne of the common mistakes we all make when wearing headphones is that we crank up the volume when there is noise around us. This is the worst thing to do as per Electronic House in the article “The Buzz on Noise Canceling Headphones

Real noise-cancelling headphones have a microphone on the outside of your headphones. The noise is then translated to an opposing sound wave that is then fed into your headphones along with the music. The sound waves that are provided with your music cancels out the sounds from around you. [The Wired Home Weblog]

This is something that has always stopped me from getting noise cancelling headphones. I’m a classical violinist, and need to look after my hearing as best I can. What makes these things dangerous is that you’re still getting the same decibel levels, you just can’t hear it anymore, which makes it even more dangerous.

music is molecule movement. mixing a wave with its phase-turned alias leeds to cancellation of the wave, i.e. the molecules don’t move anymore.
    your eardrums will not move.
what could possibly hurt your ears now?

I have a pair of noise canceling headphones that I use when I play the drums. They are excellent and you can clearly hear the music your drumming to as you play along.
