Canon 7D Loaded With $6 DIY Follow Focus

Discuss [3]

CanonIn film and video, if you want to rack focus, a “follow focus” makes the job a lot easier. Attaching to the focus ring, a follow focus can be as simple as a stick or as complicated as a gearbox.

Ultimately, the purpose is always the same: Make it as quick and simple as possible to rotate that focus ring from one spot to another. And make the job one-handed.

But while follow focus is basically a standard in motion film and video cameras, it’s nonexistent in the modern day, video-wielding dSLR world. So one flickr member made his own follow focus with a $6 steel hose clamp from Home Depot. Padded with a rubber band, it clamps right around the focus ring. And hey, it works great!

Look for the official, $200 versions from Nikon and Canon some time in the future, I’m sure. Unlike the Home Depot version, they will be powder coated black. [flickr] [Gizmodo]

Well I guess it's cheap :) Not the nicest looking thing though. I am not sure I would put that on my 7D (that I have yet to buy).

Bonjour, your story here really have me interested up to the end, so I just had to comment on it. Incidentally I discovered it over Altavista and I must confess to you I rarely read the complete review of a blog as I often get bored of the “gossip” that is offered to me on a daily basis. In contrast your column got me hooked from the first word to the very last sentenceend. Really exceptional these days in the blogging world (if you ask me). To sum up: thank you and please please go on with your good work. I’ll surely come back and check for updates! See yah

Hey, I wanted to ask you something. Is this a wordpress blog page? I will be pondering transferring my site from Blogger to wordpress, do you think that is feasible? Also did you build this unique template by yourself some how? Bless you for the help!
